Take Action: Get Bipartisan Bill for Transit Assistance Program Over the Finish Line!

When more people use public transit, everyone benefits. But the full fare to ride the bus can be a barrier for families and workers who are struggling to make ends meet. Thanks to advocates like you, state legislators are poised to pass a bill that would make it easier for thousands of eligible Minnesotans to access the Transit Assistance Program (TAP). With just days left in the session, we need your help to get this important solution over the finish line!

Take action today to tell your state legislators and key conference committee members to amplify a proven program that makes transit more affordable for those who need it most.

Metro Transit’s TAP program provides annual passes for $1 fares to people who qualify for public assistance programs. Compared to a standard $2 fare, TAP can effectively cut a person’s transit costs in half, freeing up more of their household budget to meet other essential needs like rent or child care.

A common-sense measure with bipartisan support in both chambers would integrate the application for TAP into the MNbenefits portal, where Minnesotans already apply for benefits like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This would make TAP more visible to the people it was designed to support, reduce barriers to enrollment, and ensure more people can afford to get around on public transit!

State Government Conference Committee members have agreed to include this important provision in their final bill. Now we need them to vote it out of the conference committee—and for the rest of lawmakers to vote YES on the House and Senate floors!

Take action today to tell your lawmakers and members of the conference committee that public transit should be affordable to every Minnesotan!
