In recent weeks, a handful of legislators have pushed through short-sighted amendments to the transportation bill that would undermine Minnesota’s climate progress and limit the potential of last year’s transit sales tax victory. Now, the final details of the bill are being hammered out in conference committee and we need those leaders to strip harmful provisions that would sabotage our climate policy and open up our transit sales tax to other uses.

Our new climate law directly addresses climate pollution from transportation and land use, and makes it easier for people to walk, roll, bike, or bus. But a devastating provision added to this year’s transportation bill at the last minute this year would exempt a huge percentage of highway projects where better transportation options are most needed. 

The dedicated transit funding we secured last year will allow Metro Transit to build out a nation-leading transit network that dramatically improves the lives of current riders and brings new people to the system, as well. But, lawmakers need to protect these transit dollars for their intended use: overdue improvements to transit service that will create real impact for riders.
